With Jenny Adamson, Equine Physiotherapist & Rehabilitation Specialist
For some of us, winter exercise for our horses isn’t optional. If you’re rehabbing, starting post-rehab strength work, or supporting a senior horse, keeping your horse moving through the colder months is simply non-negotiable for their health.
Winter can make everything feel harder — the weather, the dark evenings, the mud, the lack of time. But winter isn’t a season to pause your horse’s progress. It’s a season to step back, simplify, and build strength in small, meaningful ways.
Whether your horse is in rehab, having time off, or you’re simply short on daylight or good weather, non-ridden work can be one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) ways to build your horse’s physical and mental foundation.
When it comes to keeping horses strong, supple, and balanced — especially in winter or during rehab — it’s easy to think that riding is the only way. But some of the most transformative work can happen on the ground, in-hand.
